The Center for Undergraduate Excellence (The CUE) provides tutoring services, at no charge, to all students attending Penn State DuBois for classes. Both full-time and part-time students are welcome. There are a wide range of tutoring services available.
All tutoring is provided by peer tutors. Peer tutors are current students who have successfully passed, with an A average, the classes in which they tutor. In addition, peer tutors have been recommended by the professors in those classes.
Peer Tutoring
One-on-One Tutoring
Tutoring may be provided on a one-on-one fashion. In order to be sure of receiving one-on-one tutoring, the student seeking the services should schedule an appointment either by stopping into the CUE and signing up for an appointment, calling 375-4795, or e-mailing to [email protected]. Students may also walk-in to the CUE at any time; if a tutor is available, they may meet at that time.
Students may either set up a one-time appointment or develop a routine schedule with the tutor, where they return on a weekly basis.
Small Group Tutoring
Small groups of students are welcome to meet with a tutor at any time. Small groups can occur in any discipline, although specialized courses such as Anatomy and Physiology (Bio), Biology, Wildlife, and HDFS seem to utilize the small group tutoring the most. Small groups might consist of three to seven or eight students.
Small groups may meet in the CUE or may be scheduled for another quieter location.
Large Group Tutoring
Large group tutoring is available for any course where large groups of students may need tutoring on the same subjects.
Large group tutoring typically occurs in Math and Science classes, although it can be arranged for any available subject.
Supplemental Instruction
Embedded tutors are available in a limited number of classes. These tutors have previously taken the class, sit in on the class, and assist/tutor students after class. Spanish classes typically utilize embedded tutors, as do many of the more difficult science and math classes.
Academic Coaching
Tutors are also available to provide academic coaching to students. Academic coaching might include coaching students on study skills, organizational skills, test-taking skills, notetaking skills, and other skills that will help the student become more successful academically.
Study Groups/Guided Study Groups
Study groups, set up with tutors presently taking the class, may be arranged at any time throughout the semester. Study groups may occur in the CUE or may be scheduled in another quieter location.
Exam Preparation/Course Review Sessions
Throughout the semester, some professors may request course review sessions to assist students in completing homework assignments and/or preparing for exams. Students interested in attending a course review session may sign up by visiting the CUE, calling 375-4795, or e-mailing [email protected].
Current Schedules
Schedules remain the same throughout the semester. If you would like to schedule for a specific class, please check the schedule here.
Scheduling Appointments
Appointments may be made in any number of ways. Students can stop into the CUE at any time throughout the day to schedule an appointment for that day or any other day during the week. Appointments may be scheduled at the main desk or through any tutor in the CUE. Students may also “walk-in” and get immediate assistance if a tutor is available. Finally, students may call 375-4795 or e-mail [email protected]. Appointments may be scheduled recurrently for the entire semester or may be scheduled only when needed.
